Beautiful scenery and rich history at Hesteyri

Come see the stunning landscape of Jökulfirðir (Glacier fjords) with its impressive, steep snow-flecked mountains, quiet and secluded coves and get to know the history of the abandoned village of Hesteyri. Hesteyri was a village that could only be reached by boat, without electricity and roads. In the late 1940’s, the villagers made a common decision to move away. By 1952 the village stood completely abandoned.

To begin your tour, you´ll take the 70 minute boat ride from Ísafjörður to the village and upon arrival the guide will take you for a walk around Hesteyri. On the walk you´ll get insight into the history of the village, how it was to live there and enjoy the pure and colorful scenery. The walk will end in the old Doctor´s house where you´ll be served traditional Icelandic refreshments. If  you are lucky you´ll get a chance to see seals, arctic foxes or even a whale, on the way back to Ísafjörður.
