Arnarfjörður is widely considered to be the most beautiful fjord in the Westfjords because of its diverse landscape, magnificent mountains and the impressive waterfall Dynjandi, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Admire the highest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur, and bathe in a remote hot spring pool surrounded by the beautiful Icelandic nature.
An impressive waterfall and quaint villages
The great waterfall Dynjandi, is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords measuring about 100 meters high and up to 60 meters wide. A hiking path leads up to the central gorge of the waterfall, allowing visitors to come close enough to touch the water as it tumbles down into the depths.
Despite its isolation the nearby village Bíldudalur is vibrant and alive with culture including The Sea Monster Museum featuring tales of sea monsters which have played a colorful role in Icelandic folk culture for centuries. Tálknafjörður was once a base for Dutch fishermen and merchants, who named it Greenfjord. The tidy fishing village is known for its natural hot pots, the swimming pool and rich bird life on the white sandbank.
How do you name a country?
We will visit a place of great historical significance of Icelander – Raven-Flóki’s scenic point. Raven-Flóki was the first Norseman to sail to Iceland in the year 865 AD using three ravens to navigate his way to the uninhabited island. He came ashore in Vatnsfjörður and climbed up a mountain from which he spotted a large fjord full of ice. Consequently he named the entire land Iceland.
